Tourney Formats

If you're reading this, you likely already have a specific tournament format in mind. Tourney.cc attempts to be as flexible as possible when it comes to what kind of tournaments it lets you run. Unfortunately, this can make it a little complex at first to figure out which options you need and which options you can safely skip for whatever you are doing. This page serves as an introduction to a number of common formats and how you would go about using the site for them.

1-Day Double-Elimination Cup:

This is probably one of the most popular online gaming formats. For a single admin, however, it can become quite hectic to run these if there are more than 16 sign-ups. For this reason, there are two features that you will probably want to set up. The first is self-reporting for matches and the second feature is the optional check-in phase. Both features require players to have a registered tourney.cc account, but make running these type of tournaments a lot easier and give you the time needed to properly handle conflicts between contestants or setting up a live stream.

In contrast to admin-submitted match results, a player submitted match result needs to first be accepted by either the opponent or an admin, so there's no reason to worry about participants submitting fake results. There's also no need to set anything up for self-reporting to work, it's always possible for a registered participant to submit results through the site.

All this means, is that during the Preparation Stage of your tournament, you want to set up the following things on the Manage Sign-ups page:

  1. Set the option Registration Required to Yes
  2. Click the Open Public Sign-ups button, so players can sign-up on the site
  3. 30-60 minutes before your tournament starts, click the Open Check-ins button. This will ensure that if 8 of 39 players did not show up when your tourney started, you won't have one massive bracket and tons of no-shows.
  4. There's no reason to ever stop the public sign-up phase. Once everyone has checked in, simply start the tournament

Before you press the big 'Start Season 1' button on the Overview page, you'll also want to make sure you have set the 'Play-off Stage' to 'Double Elimination' and that you did not elect to have a group stage. That's really all you need to set up. At least in principle, you can now lean back and let the participants of your tourney handle the rest.

Single Elimination with Round-Robin Qualifiers:

The difference to the one-day tournament previously discussed, is that if you select to have a group stage on the Overview page, tourney.cc will create the selected number of groups on the Groups page instead of creating a bracket on the Brackets page. After all or most matches have been played you can click the big 'Proceed to Play-offs* button on the Overview page to have the select number of top performers in every group go to the playoffs.

The fastest way to get set up is to add every participant to the page yourself. If you decide to open public sign-ups, though, you should at least keep the 'Registration Required' option set to No, as it makes signing up for your tourney easier. The only reasons why you'd want to require registration for such a tourney are, that:

  1. you want to have self-reporting of match results
  2. you want tourney.cc to create a ladder based on match results of your tourney

League with multiple Seasons and Divisions:

Tourney.cc's support for this kind of tournament is arguably implemented in a fairly strange way, but it should still be very easy to run them. There are essentially four things you need to take care of:

  1. before you start your first season, make sure that every participant that's supposed to play in the same division has the same rating.
  2. use the Use seeding groups option in the groups select box
  3. after all group matches have been played, start another season instead of proceeding to play-offs. Additionally, ensure that you elect to copy the sign-ups from a previous season.
  4. Finally, adjust the ratings of the copied sign-up list in your new season to relegate and promote teams based on the results of the previous season.
